Deaf and Hard of Hearing Clients/Students- Implications for Care Providers and Teachers.
An overview of the unique problems and implications of deaf and hard of hearing students or adults. For the school nurse, Deaf and HOH students are frequently integrated within the regular education classroom, and the school nurse maybe be called upon to provide 504 accommodation suggestions. The program provides an overview of the different types of hearing loss, implications of hearing loss in the educational and social school milieu and accommodation needs. It also provides background and tips for working with deaf and HOH adults, such as parents, staff or clients themselves in any health care environment.

Audience: School nurses, teachers, school staff, daycare providers, health care and other social human service providers working with deaf or hard of hearing clients.
Options: 1-1.5 hr overview: General session or breakout-(specific to the audience-- child or adult with hearing loss).
Add 1-2 breakout-extension of general session. Introduction to sign language specific to the audience such as the school health office, primary care clinic, or the classroom. Time included for participant practice.
2-4 hr pre or post conference workshop or focus class: Includes both introduction/overview and class learning of basic sign language specific to the audience.
